1. Keep it brief: a little on the short side is better than too long. These days 60-90 seconds is about right. Knock ‘em dead and leave ‘em wanting more (there are a few exceptions, audiobook demos for example).
2. “A” material only: we want to know what you can do well, not just OK. If producers hear a “B” read on your demo, they may think of you as a “B” player.
3. Variety: we want to see what you can do, the different sides of your personality; BUT, don’t make it so diverse that we don’t get a sense of who you are.
4. Keep it current: Make sure your reel reflects current industry trends AND your current capabilities.
5. If you do a dialogue, make sure it’s about true interaction, not just two announcers taking turns reading a monologue. And make sure your partner is clearly not you – ideally the opposite sex.
6. Category: stick to a specific category (i.e. commercial, character, narration etc.) as this makes it easier for employers to find what they’re looking for. It is acceptable to make a multi-category demo when you’re starting out, or don’t have the budget or material to make multiple reels. But eventually you’ll want to build separate reels.
7. Vary the sound: make sure the audio quality of the spots isn’t identical. Your engineer should vary the vocal sound and production mixes.
8. Don’t do one side of a dialogue, sans the other part. This is a dead giveaway that it’s fake.
9. Your producer should give you your demo in full resolution audio – either a .wav or .aif file, or an audio CD. And get an .mp3 as well, if you don’t know how to create one from either of those – you’ll need it for emailing.
10. Don’t spend a lot of money on expensive artwork and duplication, as most casting is done via Internet now. You can burn and label CDs at home as needed; personally, I haven’t used a CD in years.
11. Don’t over think it! Your demos are always works-in-progress and are never “perfect” or “finished.” Get it done and get it out there!
